What’s Sunday Like?

“The only one who should take center stage in our worship is Jesus.”

bible-reading-guy-782907-1Because we don’t all have the same background or experience and because we weren’t all raised going to church on Sunday, we believe it’s important to let you know, ahead of time, what happens on Sunday morning

Sunday morning at Graceway has two parts, Bible class at 9:30 and Worship at 10:30 . We offer Bible classes for all ages, from preschool to adult. When classes end at 10:20 we have plenty of time to grab a quick “cup of Joe” and head to worship. When it comes to worship, there are basically five things you’ll notice during Sunday morning worship:

  • Bible reading
  • prayer
  • music
  • communion
  • the lesson

We open every service with a Bible reading.  Usually from a section called “the Psalms.”  We like to begin our worship this way because we believe the Bible is the Word of God.

We believe the Bible teaches us to pray to God the Father. After a while you’ll notice, we tend to pray a lot. When we pray we open ourselves up to God and His good will for our lives.

You’ll will also notice that our music or “praise” is an expression of our love for God.  But for us music serves more than one purpose. It’s not just about us showing our love, it’s about our amazement and awe at His love and mercy.  And it’s about respect  and thanksgiving for who He is and what He’s done.  It’s a communal voice lifted to the heavens as an offering.  An offering to the one we meet to honor. In the end, it’s not about us, it’s about Him.

The Lord’s supper or “communion” is a time when we, as a congregation,  focus on the sacrifice Jesus made on the Cross.  It’s a time to honor that sacrifice and remind ourselves of the covenant we’ve made with God. For many of us this is the center or the heart of why we’re here.

Contrary to popular belief the lesson is not the center of the worship.  Honestly, this is the thing that a lot of people have trouble with. Either the pastor is long winded or he’s as dry as toast.  So, we do our best to keep it interesting and informative. We like to include videos, music, text and object lessons. The real purpose is not for the “pastor” to get some attention. It’s to instruct, encourage, and lead the listener in their walk with Jesus. At Graceway we want to make sure that it’s about the message and not the man!  The only one who should take center stage in our worship is Jesus.
